Why We Need Rest

By Shannon Carpani RN.

The day after a stretch of shifts,

I step out of my bed…

There isn’t much that doesn’t hurt;

My feet, my back, my head….

The cramps grab at my calves.

My muscles spasm and ache.

How many people did I lift?

How many steps did I take?

The night was a whirlwind and blur,

Yet the emotions remain;

The highs and the lows,

The physical and mental strain.

Did I remember to chart everything?

Was something left undone?

Did I leave my patients a step ahead

Than when my shift had begun?

My body is beaten and battered

And needs some time to rest.

Downtime is what I need;

Later, I will be at my best.

Right now, my body says no

Even though I would love to see your face.

Right now, I need time to rest

And recover at my body’s pace.

When I was younger,

That pace was swift and quick.

Now, my body is a burden;

Sore, achy, and stiff as a brick.

I’ll still do what I do,

And I’ll love every bit.

I love taking care of people,

That I have to admit.

Today, on my day off,

I have myself to care for.

I need to take the time

To recover, renew, and restore.

When I don’t get this rest,

My body and emotions become weak.

Everything starts to fail

Including my memory and technique.

So, I take this time to learn about each need

I learn to cope and manage my time;

So, that when I’m in a situation that matters,

I’ll be at my prime.
