California RN License Renewal Deadline

Your California RN license renewal deadline falls on the last day of the month following your birth month, every two years. The date is set by the BRN at initial licensure and does not shift if you renew late or move between active and inactive status. Missing it by one day converts your license to delinquent, triggers a higher renewal fee, and prohibits practice under Business and Professions Code §2795.

How the California RN License Renewal Date Is Calculated

The BRN ties every California RN license to the nurse's birth month. Your first license is issued for two birthdays, not two years: it expires on the last day of the month following your birth date. A nurse born in July whose license issues in January 2025 has a first expiration date of August 31, 2027, not January 31, 2027.

From the first expiration forward, the cycle repeats every two years on the same birth-month schedule. A delinquent renewal paid in March does not shift the next deadline to March. The birth-month anchor holds regardless of when you submit.

How to Confirm Your Deadline in BreEZe

Log into breeze.ca.gov and select your RN license from the license summary screen. The expiration date in the license detail view is your operative deadline. The BRN mails renewal notices approximately three months before expiration, but a notice sent to an outdated address does not extend the deadline.

The BreEZe renewal submission portal opens approximately 90 days before your expiration date. Before that window, the system will not accept a renewal application, even with 30 CE certificates ready to go.

Early submission within the 90-day window does not shorten your next renewal cycle. Your next expiration date is always two years from the current one.

What Does "Delinquent" Actually Mean?

A California RN license goes delinquent the first day after the expiration date. There is no grace period under California law and no administrative processing buffer. The license is either active or it is not.

What It Costs to Renew Late

There is a third option that sits between renewing and lapsing. A nurse who cannot finish her hours before the deadline can renew to inactive status instead, which preserves the license without authorizing practice. What If It Has Been More Than Eight Years?

The eight-year mark is where the BRN's renewal pathway changes entirely. Below eight years, delinquent renewal is available through BreEZe with the higher fee and a completed CE requirement. At or past eight years, the nurse must download the BRN's 8-Year Renewal Application Packet and apply directly. The online system will not process the application.

The 8-Year Renewal also requires proof of competency to practice, satisfied either by verification of a current active RN license in another U.S. state or territory, or by retaking the licensing examination. A nurse who holds no active out-of-state license and does not sit the exam has no reinstatement pathway available.

Reinstatement restores the original license number on the same birth-month cycle. The reinstated license does not receive a fresh two-year window from the date of reinstatement.

CE Requirements When Renewing a Delinquent License

The 30-hour CE requirement applies to every delinquent renewal where the lapse is under eight years. What shifts is the qualifying window. A nurse submitting in May 2026 for a license that expired in October 2023 cannot use CE from 2021 or 2022. The 30 hours must fall within the two years immediately preceding the submission date, not within the original lapsed cycle.
